Important: This guide provides general planning information. Embassy, district-office and immigration procedures can change. Verify the current requirements with the relevant authority before acting.

Keep early communication on-platform

Reputable dating platforms have reporting tools, some level of identity verification, and a record of the conversation that can matter if something goes wrong. Staying on-platform for the early stages of contact preserves all of that. A quick push to move to a private messaging app, before you've had any real conversation, is worth noticing — it's not automatically a red flag on its own, but combined with other signs (see the red flags in this guide) it's a pattern scammers use specifically to get outside a platform's protections.

There's nothing wrong with eventually moving to a messaging app once you've built some real rapport and ideally had a video call. The caution is specifically about very early, unusually fast pressure to do so.

Verify gradually

The most useful verification tools are simple and low-drama: a live video call at a specific, short-notice time (scammers using stolen or borrowed photos often can't or won't do this convincingly), personal details that stay consistent across multiple conversations, and a normal social context — friends, family, a job, a daily routine — that holds together rather than staying vague no matter how many times you ask.

None of this needs to feel like an interrogation. A genuine person will generally find it completely normal that you want to see them on video and hear about their actual daily life before things get serious — reluctance to do either is more informative than almost anything they might say.

Never send pressured payments

Requests for money before you've met in person are the single most common feature of romance scams, almost always wrapped in a story designed to make refusing feel unreasonable: a sudden medical emergency, a stranded family member, visa or travel costs to finally come meet you, or a can't-miss investment opportunity. The emotional urgency is the mechanism — it's built specifically to short-circuit the normal caution you'd apply to a stranger asking for money.

Treat any request for money before an established, in-person relationship as a hard stop, regardless of how sympathetic the story is or how much you feel you've already invested in the relationship. If it's genuine, it will still be true, and she will still be there, after you've taken time to think it over and, ideally, verify independently.

Meet safely

Ordinary precautions apply to a first in-person meeting just as they would meeting anyone new: choose a public place rather than a private residence, arrange your own transportation rather than relying entirely on someone you've just met, and let a friend or family member know your plans and check in with them afterward. Build some independent activities into any trip so the whole visit isn't staked entirely on one person before you've even landed.

None of this reflects distrust of a specific person — it's simply sound practice for meeting anyone new after primarily online contact, the same as it would be anywhere in the world.

Protect personal data

Passport scans, banking details or account access, intimate photos, and passwords should never be shared with someone you've only met online, regardless of the reason given — a visa application, a shared account, a booking she says she needs help with. Legitimate needs for this kind of information arise later, in a well-established relationship, and even then usually through official channels rather than informal sharing over chat.

Be cautious as well about how much you share yourself in early conversations — financial details, home address, or travel plans are worth holding back until trust is genuinely established on both sides.

Look for consistency

More than any single test, consistency over time is the most reliable signal of a genuine connection: her story, routine, and availability holding together across weeks and months, effort flowing in both directions rather than only from you, realistic rather than rushed plans, and respect when you set a boundary rather than pressure to abandon it. A relationship that's still standing after ordinary time and ordinary friction is a far better sign than one that felt intense and perfect from day one.
